LONDON'S SECRET VILLAGE

I have to comment after looking through these walks to pick my next one soon......... I took my Aunt on Jeans walk through clerkenwel,( some years back ) and she was fantastic! I just didn't want it to end..... Brilliant stuff! Though I was born in London, I now live on the outskirts nr Richmond.... My lovely park is the old Air field where the hangers of the Misty light, and the Spitfire were were made and .......... The old rundown offices mess is still in the woods, and further up the road is powder mill lane..........Across from Hounslow heath where they made the gun-powder in Charles 1 days..... the Ford river sweeps past us into the Hamptons and along into Bushy park, and Hampton court palace to feed the fountains there. Ann Bolyn's house has burnt down, but the old Tudor lodge is still there..... If you want a walk there get in touch.

Hi Valerie,

Hmmmmm. That's tempting. Let us give that one some thought.

We enjoyed this so much I blogged about it, with a link back to London Walks http://elephantseyegarden.blogspot.com/2010/02/what-do-you-do-when-you-are-in-london.html

Took my 15 year old niece on this walk this afternoon and we both loved it!An interesting trip around Clerkenwell and I am always amazed as to the hidden treasures in our midst in this great city of mine! Jean was a delightful guide and made us really appreciate the history of this area.In fact my niece said that history in school is boring but these walks make it seem so real-teachers listen up!

Not for the London Walks beginner. There are lots of sexier walks. However, this walk really filled in a blank spot in my knowledge of London. Clerkenwell is so close to St. Paul's, and yet so hidden away. I can't believe I'd missed it all these years! It was exciting to see the actual "Clerks' Well" and to hear about when the Fleet River exploded.

Jean is clearly knowledgeable and experienced. I'd certainly go on another walk with her. She acted out a scene from Oliver Twist for us, playing all of the parts. (Great tiny voice for little Oliver!)

All in all, a laid-back but lovely walk.

This is perhaps one of my favourite walks, perhaps as it is my neighbourhood!! When the walk ends there are loads of lovely places to have a bite or a drink. Ask the guide to direct you to Smithfields market, cross through there for loads of pubs whose patrons spill out onto the street for a post work pint. Vinoteca on St Johns St is a lovely place for a glass of wine, Kurz and lang is an authentic German sausage place- on the corner where St Johns and Cowcross meet. the area is very lively as the workday ends!
