The Weather
The weather. Always the weather.

It was ever thus. Britain enters recorded history with a complaint about the weather. The Roman historian Tacitus shuddered, "the climate is objectionable, with its frequent rains and mists".

(For the record, Tacitus found our forefathers almost as appalling as the weather: "one must remember, we are dealing with barbarians".)

And no queastion about it, this winter's driven the point home. Over and over. But nil desperandum. 1) We will get through it - it will pass. And 2) there are ways of thumbing your nose at it. Even in the "weather-sensitive" world of London Walks!

First line of defence of course is to think about one of the gallery or museum tours: The Best Art Tour Ever, for example or The V & Tour or The British Museum Tour. Or The St. Paul's Cathedral Tour or Monday's or Friday's Westminster Abbey Tour.

And that's not to mention Behind Closed Doors, most of which takes place indoors!

And  Pub Walks are a good bet as well. For the very good reason that they're punctuated by "pit stops" at warm, welcoming pubs!

The other thing is to be a little bit hardy and dress properly. If you let the weather call the shots in this "objectionable climate" you'd never leave the house. And a bracer of Estonian wisdom never comes amiss in this connection. I'm talking about that old Estonian saying: "there's no such thing as bad weather, only wrong clothing".
